The 3D Debate
I have been reluctant to see 3D as anything that profoundly changes the media landscape. This week I have slowly changed my attitude. After attending Katzenberg’s talk at NAB I have distilled my thoughts to this:
Key Assumption:
3D Technology will rapidly improve in a dramatic way. The problems associated with today’s 3D will largely disappear in the next 12 months. In the next 3-5 years it will become pervasive and relatively cheap to produce. Once 3D technology reaches the point where it is no longer a distraction it will become pervasive. At home, I am not willing to wear 3D glasses (outside a select handful of movies). Give me a TV where I don’t need glasses though and you’ve got yourself a deal.
Key Conclusion:
3D, like color, like HD, offers the opportunity to create an experience closer to our experience of real-life (ie everyday life is in color and 3D). If executed properly that offers the artist an ability to get me more emotionally engaged in the story. If the characters are able to become ‘more alive’ that is a good thing for story tellers. For that reason 3D will become the dominant form factor.
Bottom-line:
1) 3D is here to stay.
2) If you are in production you must learn 3D techniques NOW.
3) Story is, was and forever will be the key to great experiences.
So what do you think?
